Understanding SAD

You are starting on this therapy already, by researching Seasonal Affective Disorder.

However, reading more widely may help.

Depressive illnesses appear to be linked to high intelligence levels, though this is not absolutely determined.

This site seeks to provide a rich source of informations, ideas and guidance for sufferers of Seasonal Affective Disorder ("SAD"), or people who think that they maybe sufferers. It seeks to help them gain an understanding of the condition and its causes. Following on from that, to take a balanced holistic approach to addressing the symptoms through a variety of potential therapies and remedies, many of which relate to specific foods, exercise, lifestyle and personal issues. Some are fun and others may surprise you.

I have listed some books on the Recommended Books page.

A SAD sufferer dreads the onset of winter, but knows that it will improve considerably or disappear completely in the spring.

There are aspects to helping a sufferer:

  • food supplements
  • light boxes at home - high intensity daylight lamps
  • natural light - holidays in the tropics, maybe living in brighter places
  • music which makes you happy
  • laughter - humour is a great tonic
  • exercise
  • activity or keeping busy
  • natural remedies (a section of its own)
  • specific foods - oily fish, egg yolks, liver
